Store-bought vs custom fursuit head: when to upgrade

Grey and teal custom fursuit head and suit by Fursuit Hub

Every autumn, costume shops fill up with fursuit-style heads, and a lot of people try one on for Halloween. Some love it straight away. Many find out within an hour that they can barely see, they’re overheating, and the head doesn’t look like their character. Here’s an honest comparison of store-bought and custom heads, how to get through Halloween night in the head you already have, and how to tell when it’s time to upgrade.

Why so many people start with a store-bought head

A mass-produced head is an easy way in. It costs a small fraction of a custom commission, you can buy it today, and it answers the big question: do you actually enjoy wearing a head? That’s worth knowing before you spend real money. Some people also buy one as a base to refurb, or simply as a one-night Halloween costume.

None of that is a mistake. The problems start when a costume head is asked to do the job of a fursuit head: hours of wear, a convention, photos, or representing your character rather than a shop design.

Store-bought vs custom: what’s actually different

Here are the differences wearers notice most. The store-bought column describes mass-produced heads in general. Quality varies, and some are better than others.

Five common problems with store-bought heads, and quick fixes for Halloween

If you already have a costume head and Halloween is days away, these fixes make it safer and more comfortable. They won’t turn it into a custom head, but they’ll help you get through the night.

1. You can’t see much

Poor visibility is one of the most common complaints about costume heads. Practise at home before the night: walk around, use stairs, go through doorways, and look down at your feet. Bring a handler, a friend out of costume who can guide you, carry your things and spot hazards. Stick to well-lit streets you know. Never drive, cycle or cross busy roads with the head on. Don’t cut the eyes bigger in a hurry. On many bases that weakens the shell and changes the look for good.

2. It gets hot fast

Every fursuit head is warm. One with little airflow is worse. Plan regular breaks with the head off, drink water before you feel thirsty, and stop at once if you feel dizzy, sick or confused. Indoor parties get much hotter than a walk outside, so take more breaks there.

3. It slides around

A loose head moves when you turn, so the eyeholes drift away from your eyes. A snug balaclava or a few pieces of soft foam inside can steady it. Make sure padding doesn’t block airflow or press on your face.

4. Breathing and fogging

If you wear glasses, check that they fit inside before the night and that the lenses don’t fog. Give your face room to breathe. If the inside feels damp, take a break and let it dry out.

5. It smells after one night

After wearing, let the head air-dry, inside out where possible, somewhere cool and away from direct heat. Don’t put it in a washing machine or a dryer. Store it somewhere dry, not squashed in a bag, so the fur and shape last.

Going out in costume at night? Wear something reflective or a small light so drivers can see you. Remember that a light helps other people see you. It doesn’t fix limited vision from inside the head.

Signs it’s time to upgrade to a custom head

If several of these sound like you, a costume head has done its job: it showed you that you enjoy wearing one. It’s time for a head that’s built for you.

  • You want to wear it for more than an hour or two at a time, or to a convention or meet-up.
  • You have a character (a fursona with a ref sheet) and want the head to be that character, not a shop design.
  • Poor vision or heat stops you from enjoying it.
  • You want expression in photos. Follow-me eyes seem to look at the camera from any angle.
  • You’re planning to add paws and a tail, or eventually a full body, and want everything to match.
  • You’ve started pricing up fur and tools to rebuild the head anyway.

Refurb the costume head, or commission a new one?

Refurbing means stripping a store-bought head and re-furring or reshaping it. Many fursuiters do this as a fun first project, and it teaches you a lot about how heads are built. Go in with realistic expectations. The base keeps its original shape, eye placement and size, so vision and fit only improve so much. Some plastic bases don’t take kindly to being stripped. Faux fur, glue, foam and tools add up, and it can take weeks of evenings.

If you enjoy making things, refurb for the fun of it. If what you want is a comfortable, durable head that looks like your character, commission one. Spend your time on a great ref sheet instead.

What a custom fursuit head from Fursuit Hub includes

Every head we make is built from your ref sheet and includes:

  • A lined interior that’s comfortable against your skin and easier to keep clean.
  • A clean-shaved face, a plush nose and a minky tongue.
  • 3D follow-me eyes as standard (2D eyes on request). The eyes are splash-resistant.
  • A static jaw. Moving jaws are available on skull dog heads, and protogens get an LED visor.

A head-only commission starts at €999+ labor. Fur, VAT and shipping are extra, and your design (markings, colors, extras) changes the final number. Your written quote is the real figure. Want paws and a tail too? A mini partial (head, paws and tail) is one commission, or you can add parts later. See every option on the commissions page, or compare suit types in the price calculator.

  • Quotes usually come back in about a week, with a timeline.
  • A non-refundable deposit locks your slot once we’ve agreed in writing. The balance is due before shipping. Monthly instalments are available: choose “Monthly installment” as your budget option in the quote form.
  • We ship worldwide. Customs, VAT and import duties are paid by the buyer (what to expect).
  • Commissions are open to buyers aged 18 and over.

Can you get a custom head before Halloween?

Honestly, not this year. A custom head is built in a slot queue, so it can’t be made in a few days. Your quote tells you the timeline. If you book now, though, you can plan around your next event, whether that’s a winter convention, a spring meet or next Halloween. Tell us the date in your quote notes so we can say up front whether it’s realistic.

And there’s a seasonal bonus: every fursuit commission booked this Halloween season gets a free add-on or a surprise gift.

Turn what you learned into a better commission

A costume head is a great test run. Before you request a quote, write down what bothered you, because it makes your quote more accurate:

  1. Vision and heat. What bothered you most? Do you wear glasses? Put it in the notes.
  2. Style. Toony, cute, sleek? Collect a few photos of heads you like, ours or anyone’s, so we understand the look. Browse our portfolio for ideas.
  3. Eyes. 3D follow-me eyes are standard. Ask if you prefer 2D.
  4. Your character. Prepare front and side views and color swatches. Our ref sheet guide shows what to include.
  5. Budget. See what fursuits cost in 2026, and choose monthly instalments if spreading the cost helps.

FAQ

Are store-bought fursuit heads worth it?

For a single Halloween party or to find out whether you enjoy wearing a head, they can be. They are made to one generic size and design, so vision, airflow and fit are usually limited, and they are not your character. If you plan to wear a head often, or for hours at a time, a custom head is the better buy.

What is the difference between a cheap fursuit head and a custom one?

A custom head is designed from your reference sheet and built for one wearer. At Fursuit Hub every head is lined, has a clean-shaved face, a plush nose, a minky tongue and 3D follow-me eyes as standard. A mass-produced head is one design in one size for everybody.

Can I get a custom fursuit head in time for Halloween?

Not this year. A custom head is built in a slot queue, and your quote comes with a timeline. If you book now you can plan for your next event, and commissions booked this Halloween season get a free add-on or a surprise gift.

How much does a custom fursuit head cost?

The current starting labor price for a head is shown on our fursuit head commission page, in euros for Europe and US dollars everywhere else. Fur, VAT and shipping are extra, and your quote is the real figure. You can ask about monthly instalments in the quote form.

Can I add paws and a tail later?

Yes. Ask in your quote or through the contact form. A mini partial (head, paws and tail) is also available as one commission.
